Shrimp consumption in Las Vegas is
more than 60,000 pounds a day -- higher than the rest of the United States
combined; it would take 288 years for one person to spend one night in every
hotel room in Las Vegas;
about 150 couples get married in Las Vegas each
day; to drive from Los Angeles, California to Reno, Nevada
the direction traveled is northwest; Samuel Clemens took the penname
"Mark Twain" while a reporter working for the Territorial Enterprise in Virginia City, Nevada in 1862; the
longest running show in Las Vegas is
the Folies Bergere at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino -- it opened in 1959.

Back
in 1907, a dairy farmer named Harry Anderson selected a sparsely vegetated
piece of land just east of one of the valley’s artesian wells and with a lot of
hard work, began irrigating a dairy farm in southern Nevada.
This occurred just two short years after a successful land auction by
the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake City Railroad created a rail stopover
town called Las Vegas, translated to mean “the meadow” in Spanish.
Las Vegas was fast becoming a growing, thriving desert
community. More and more people were
moving to town, and many new businesses were opening up to meet the growing
demand for goods and services.
Anderson
Dairy eventually outgrew its downtown location and moved to a new plant site on
the corner of Hoover and 5th streets. Service and customer satisfaction had helped
build Anderson’s
strong reputation in home delivery. It
was early in the 1940’s when Anderson Dairy’s growing wholesale trade business
expanded, with emerging grocery store chains, hotels and restaurants increasing
the demand for fresh dairy products.
When
World War II broke out, Anderson Dairy did its part for the war effort. With gasoline in short supply, Anderson Dairy
removed the engines from their dairy trucks and put horses back into service to
pull the trucks and make deliveries.
In
1956, Anderson Dairy built a new processing plant on what is today’s present
site. In 1995, plans were established to
remodel and expand their facilities. By
May of 1996, they were utilizing newly expanded freezer and cooler box areas,
as well as a new UHT dairy creamer room, expanded cottage cheese and sour cream
producing rooms, a new ice cream manufacturing system and an improved and more
efficient docking and load-out system.
In
addition, they’ve added a unique new twist to their marketing program: opening the plant to the public, offering a
dedicated tour/education room for enlightening tour groups (and building brand
identification and awareness). Anderson Dairy remains
a locally owned and operated dairy processing plant that employs over 215
full-time team members.
Over
the years, many dairies have come and gone in the Las Vegas valley. Today as the company celebrates its 101st
year, Anderson Dairy is proud of its lasting heritage in greater Las
Vegas. They attribute their success to
a long-term commitment to their hometown, to produce quality dairy products,
and to a determination to get their products to customers as fresh and fast as
possible. They are committed to a standard
of quality and service that has helped them maintain a growing market share in
this fast growing community.

Sundance Helicopter Company -- Member of the Month - October 2008
5596 Haven Street ♦ Las Vegas, NV 89119 ♦ (702) 736-0606
It is no surprise that Sundance Helicopters has been voted
the Best Helicopter Tour Company in Nevada by Nevada Magazine for four years
running. By placing a premium on quality and exceptional service, the company
has positioned itself at the top of the industry.
Sundance began operating out of Sky
Harbor Airport
in Henderson, Nevada, in April 1985 with one small
piston-powered helicopter. The company was known as Helicopter Services of
Nevada (HSN) and flight training was its primary business. In 1986 owners Fred
and Karen Cleeves purchased a used Bell JetRanger, moved their operation to a
hangar on the North end of McCarran
International Airport,
and conducted tours of the Las Vegas Strip from a parking lot at what was then
the Landmark Hotel.
In January 1988 HSN initiated a Grand
Canyon tour that featured a champagne picnic inside the canyon.
This became the most popular helicopter tour in Las Vegas and, thanks to extensive media
exposure, one of the best known tours of any kind worldwide.
The company changed hands in 1992 when Rick Eisenreich, Jim
Granquist, and John Sullivan purchased the company from Fred Cleeves. By then
HSN had six helicopters, and business had expanded to include military support,
firefighting, external load, power line survey, and traffic reporting. Tours to
the Grand Canyon were a rapidly growing
component of the business. The name was changed to Sundance Helicopters in July
1994, reflecting an increased emphasis on tourism.
Business increased steadily under the new ownership and the
company outgrew one operating facility after another. In late 1997 Sundance
broke ground on the west side of McCarran
Airport for a new hangar,
passenger terminal and office facility.
This move triggered further growth, doubling the company’s
size in four years.
Today, tourism accounts for three-quarters of Sundance’s
business. Customers can enjoy a champagne picnic inside the Grand Canyon, a
boat ride on Colorado River or a Hualapai Indian B-B-Q. Bryce and Zion national parks,
exotic dinner retreats and the Las Vegas Strip at night are also popular tours.
Sundance remains committed to its charter and utility
customers. During the summer months up to four helicopters are dedicated to
firefighting. Video and film production is also a growing market for the
company. Sundance has been featured in several major films including “America’s
Sweetheart”, “Oceans 11”, and “Oceans 13”.
Now operating 20 helicopters including several of the state
of the art “quiet technology” EC130’s, Sundance flew over 130,000 passengers
last year from its terminal location in Las
Vegas and from a heliport at Grand Canyon West
Airport in Arizona. Sundance employees 125 people including
commercial pilots, mechanics, tour coordinators, and passenger service
employees.
Sundance is conscious of its civic responsibilities and
generously contributes services to a variety of charitable and non-profit
organizations. A particularly rewarding part of the company’s charitable work
is its contributions to the Make-a-Wish Foundation. During the Christmas
holidays, Santa Claus frequently arrives on a Sundance Helicopter to meet
special groups of children.
Looking ahead, our objective is to continue growing in Las Vegas while remaining
true to our mission: “Every day serving our customers at a level beyond their
expectations.”
